When you think of getting married which month automatically comes to mind..... the traditional easter wedding in April, Summer wedding in August or the no so conventional winter wedding in November or December.

Wedding season is now 12 months of the year with themes, that range from retro to romance and futuristic to funky what will you choose.... As Christmas is nearly upon us - we here at NEWP thought we would highlight winter weddings - why? well many of our clients have opted for snowy scenes rather than parying for a heatwave that never comes..

So what do you need for a truly fabulous winter wedding, well it's is totally up to you... just because it's Christmas does not mean you need to delve around in the loft looking for baubles or tinsel. Planning a wedding can be difficult…. It may seem exciting, easy and straightforward following your engagement, but there are elements throughout the planning process that will surprise you, no matter how prepared you may be. But remember to not lose sight of why you are planning a wedding. Amidst the stresses and emotional turbulence of the planning process, know that the two of you are on the same team, working toward the same goal. Also, if you have a vision for your day, be firm with what it is that you want. It’s easy to let other people, especially loved ones, influence your decision-making by offering their opinions and ideas. Grateful as you may be for such wonderful advice, and even though you know that those offerings come from hearts filled with love, at the end of the day, it is your wedding day and what you’ve dream't of.

Our clients take the decision to bring us on board to ease the stress and to enable a fun planning experience. The newly married Amanda Wilson captures her wedding journey perfectly in her testimonial regarding North East Wedding Planner’s services so I have decided to let Amanda take the lead on this one….

Donna, Thank you so much for playing a massive part in my wedding day. I couldn't have done it without you. I came to you having organised only a few things for my wedding. I read a magazine article about your business and thought, well if this bride has a small budget and can afford a wedding planner, then I must be able to too! Gone are the days of 'celebrity only' wedding planners. So I called you and we met in a lovely, relaxed atmosphere to have an initial consultation and discussed my ideas (and your suggestions of course). From that moment on, I just knew I couldn't have a more memorable day without you being part of the planning.

You put me in touch with suppliers who gave massive discounts on such things as stationary, groomswear, bridesmaid dresses, florists and, who could forget, the band, Hip Operation! Nicky, I think, will be your best friend for life! I would have never have thought to have my bridesmaids in 3 different colours, but it worked brilliantly, and that was all down to you.

You corresponded with me constantly and were willing to meet me at suppliers' locations and for more general appointments, anywhere that suited me. In the run up to the wedding, you kept in touch by phone and text, just to make sure I was alright and to ask if I needed any help. This meant a lot as I'm sure you'll remember my few 'wobbler' moments! The morning of the wedding couldn't have gone more smoothly. You and your assistant were an absolute godsend keeping everybody calm and organising where everybody needed to be. I know you did a lot for my Mum on that day and I really appreciate that too.

So all in all, I could not recommend you highly enough.

"My Princess"

Ok I am one of those individuals who believes in fate…. So when my husband needed an extra pair of hands at an exhibition I gave up my beloved Sunday morning in Pj’s to assist. I never imagined I would meet the most friendly and genuine romantic bride Rachael Jones, affectionately known forever as “My Princess”

Rachael and Peter Clarke (Groom) accompanied by Rachael’s parents Mike & Julie walked around the wedding exhibition looking at everything from photography, flowers and cars. Rachael in her element and Mike a Financial Director mentally totting up the cost of his precious daughters special day. As you do in these situations I asked the date of the wedding “no date” venue “no venue” so I cheekily mentioned that I could maybe assist with the planning of their wedding through North East Wedding Planners …… so here the story starts and also where a friendship started too.

I arranged to meet with the Jones in a week or two, we talked through the budget, Rachael’s ideas and it quickly became apparent that Rachael is a girly girl who just loves pink. So yes the colour scheme for the wedding was indeed pink which threw up a few challenges, one being when the groomsmen all found out and refused to wear pink ties….

Both Rachael and Pete wanted a romantic setting for their civil ceremony with an exclusive venue for the wedding breakfast and evening reception with accommodation on site. I made a few suggestions, the National Trust site Washington Old Hall selected for the ceremony and Eslington Villas for the wedding breakfast.

The dress had to have “Bling” and the bridesmaids well shades of pink what else would do, as the planning started to progress everything else fell into place… with shoes from New York and a bracelet from Tiffany’s, celebrity magicians and traditional harpists to entertain …….

At this point I believe I should point out that even though the budget was set two years prior to the wedding day and the Government increased the VAT twice etc North East Wedding Planners still brought the whole wedding in under budget (Just).

On the day it’s self a few surprises, one of which being an Aston Martin to transport the groom, although I am not sure who enjoyed the “scenic” route to the ceremony more, Pete or his best man Simon. Rachael had a surprise of her own, Mike ever the joker vowed he would not cry when Rachael entered the room fully dressed in her stunning bridal gown….well I wish I had put a bet on, as tears certainly began to fall and Mike’s emotions took over… Julie as ever the proud mum just stood back to watch the moment unfold, it’s one I will treasure forever.

I could go on and on about this beautiful bride who I now am proud to call a friend but the mini video below shows just how happy Rachael and Pete are as the new Mr & Mrs Peter Clarke… so Rachael as promised all those months ago here is your wedding on the NEWP Blog.

Kate Middleton - totally English design

After months of international speculation, the beautiful Kate Middleton revealed the winning wedding look as she walked into Westminster Abbey to marry Prince William.

Her vintage-inspired v-neck ivory gown by Alexander McQueen's Sarah Burton featured long, lace sleeves and a sweetheart style bodice. The bodice, skirt and underskirt were constructed out of French Chantilly and English Cluny lace while the skirt was a luxe ivory and white satin gazer. The veil a 2.7 metres completed the overall elegant and iconic look. Kate's wedding shoes also created by the Alexander McQueen team, in duchess' satin shoes hand-embroidered with lace at the Royal School of Needlework in Surrey, UK.

Kate wore a Cartier tiara, loaned to her by the Queen. And Middleton's parents bought her matching Robinson Pelham earrings.

So did the inspiration for the design come from the late great Grace Kelly who married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956. The Oscar-winning American actresses dress by MGM studio costume designer Helen Rose. It was created from 125-year-old Valenciennes rose-point lace, silk taffeta and 98 yards of tulle and took more than a dozen seamstresses six weeks to complete.

So just who is Sarah Burton? The 36-year-old Brit was mentored by the late designer McQueen for 14 years. When McQueen died in 2010, Burton transitioned from assistant to creative director of his company.

The whole world will be tuning into the Royal Wedding on Friday 29th April to obtain the first glimpse of "The DRESS". A North east wedding planning business launched a recession busting service.. The new service will help brides afford their big day during challenging economic times.

North East Wedding Planners (NEWP) based in Durham, has created Recessionista Weddings to help brides save money.

"Should children attend a wedding".....

Following my participation on the BBC debate this Wednesday “Should children attend weddings”. I have received many facebook comments and emails with varying points of view. So if you are just sipping your coffee, browsing the Internet, thinking you'd look for some easy reading, then you've fallen on the controversial NEWP BLOG. Where a fever-pitch debate is still raging in thousands of homes around the region: should children attend weddings? You might or might not be surprised to hear that many people believe children and weddings do not mix, however others believe no wedding is complete without the traditional flower girls walking down the aisle.

So is it a case of each to their own, or do you believe children are part of the family and should be included. Which part of the fence do you reside?

Weddings are a beautiful celebration of the start of a new family. Children are a natural part of any family but should they automatically be included on a wedding invitation. During the BBC debate one father stated he “would not accept any invitation to a wedding if he could not take his children”, however is there more to consider than the bride and groom preferring to have an adult only occasion. How many couples fear that very special moment when they exchange vows, a time for quiet and instead a small child starts bawling ruining the special ambience. Is it really selfish for a couple to want to avoid this scenario…

On the other side who doesn't smile when the flower girl and ring bearer walk down the aisle? A small child happily swinging a floral posy enthralled at everyone focusing attention on them, well that’s until either the petals are dismantled or the posy is used as a misile… but no matter what, children provide fabulous photo opportunities that will be captured forever.

So can a compromise be reached, magic words such as crèche, tea party and bouncy castle come to mind. After 20 years in the wedding and events industry Donna Redfearn has seen it all, parents who prefer to enjoy their day and allow their darling to cause havoc by running around tables screaming to in stark contrast parents who come prepared with colouring books, pens, games and snacks just in-case the menu is not quite to the child’s taste.

Looking back at the many weddings NEWP has planned over the years, some of our bride and grooms already have their own small children. Donna and the NEWP team have worked with the couples to ensure all the children attending the day are catered for in their own right. From the funky children’s fruit cocktails for welcome drinks, fully CRB checked crèche facility to provide full or partial care to mini guests. A children fancy dress tea party with healthy options included as well as the must have jelly and ice-cream for dessert. To keep the childrens attention the NEWP have designed themed children’s areas with fairies and knights, disney and even a bird of prey night flight display with an hour of handling specific to small children.

So “Should children attend weddings” is this more about personal preference than a right or wrong answer…. North East Wedding Planners would love to hear your thoughts on the subject….

Set the scene by creating the theme.

Creating a wedding theme to form the basis of your whole event is the pinnacle point that the rest of the planning will be based on. We are often asked if a colour can be the theme. The simple answer is yes; it may not be the predominant start but may be the deciding factor to set the scene.

“Pink” is the colour of choice this year, originally the on trend colour highlighted on the cat walk at London and New York fashion week. With designers featuring “Vintage”, fashionistas continued to transfer aspects to bridal wear and venue staging. To soften the look soft tones of creams and sage greens for bridesmaids, with tea cups and posies.

But what about the “WOW” factor, create drama and visual excitement with hot fuchsia and fantasy themes taken to the extreme. Forget the fairy princess pink and think passion pink. Turn your wedding into a fully staged production by using colour to really bring your day to life; of course this takes courage and a lot of attention to detail. Are you brave enough!! Spotting the trend..... by North East Wedding Planners

Defining the style of your wedding comes in many aspects, however for most brides inspiration comes from the much dreamed of wedding dress. The North East Wedding Planning team visit many wedding industry trade shows and event showcases to spot up and coming trends.

So what is hot for this season ……..

Dressing the bride:
Dresses in 2011 are all about the detail. Dresses are becoming more about romance with pearls and beading featured heavily. Brides looking for simple shapes need not worry, there will still be plenty of delicate and graceful lines, but there are more opportunities to express your personality through detailing or adding accessories to your outfit.

Lace is big news in 2011 and will continue into 2012 as it can be used across the whole dress, just to accentuate the bodice or even as a shrug across the shoulders. It’s also key to the vintage look that continues to be big in 2011, so if you’re looking for something really on trend, combine a classic shape with lace gloves and summer parasol.
Colour is being introduced to bridal gowns, influenced by the catwalk, more contemporary oyster shades, nudes and the palest pinks are all features of the couture bridal collections this summer, with stronger shades of plum and red for the autumn winter season.
Accessories are key this year with no bride complete without a head piece containing feathers, lace or beading.

Colour themes:
The love of all things retro and vintage continues with very elegant and formal colours. Navy, sage greens, creams and deep plums all feature but are accentuated with a modern twist. So navy could be teamed with lime green or fuchsia to create the wow factor. These colours are certainly for the brave and have to be used carefully.

A palette of barely there oyster, vintage pink, soft peaches and creams are often more flattering against the UK complexion and look fabulous with the more romantic dress styles. These types of colours can be used throughout a venue they are so delicate – repeat use of them really enhances a look. Spring and summer weddings are perfect for these colours.

Well what a successful start to the UK Wedding Show at the Metro Arena today. The team (Andrea, Suzanne and I) along with Lesley from Stem Ginger have spoken to some very creative couples planning their wedding in 2011 and even some weddings in 2014...

It is so refreshing to talk to couples who would like something a little different. Our stand highlighted the bang on trend "Vintage Chic" based on the very popular Cath Kidston colour theme with a little breakfast at tiffany's for an alternative twist. The feedback from you has been amazing with a few brides even screaming with delight at our display...

The past twenty four hours have been fantastic for us with the Newcastle Evening Chronicle featuring North East Wedding Planners for their commitment to the wedding industry and the new package “Recessionista Weddings" which aims to save clients up to 25% off their total wedding budget….. in this the financial climate we all need to save money wherever possible and a wedding is no exception.

My best friend on my wedding day.....

Many little girls dream of owning a pony one day, just the same as many star gaze about their dream wedding….. But when your wedding day arrives how do you include your trusted four legged friend into your special day.

As a fellow horse rider my perfect scenario would have been to ride from home to the ceremony, something a little different to a horse and carriage. However my venue like most was indeed too far and then again my dress not suitable….with the negatives out of the way how indeed can you ride to your ceremony or reception. Well firstly many brides do manage to ride to the venue, but many factors have to be considered mainly the time of year and distance being the main factors.

Below is a few hints and tips-

1. Think carefully, even the most trusted animal can bolt

2. Is the route to the ceremony a busy road. Do you ride on this stretch of road often – traffic noise, freaky signposts

3. Will you ride side saddle, inform your bridal dress designer that you intend to ride on your wedding day, she/he maybe able to suggest options on how to adapt your dress.

4. Wear white leggings and riding boots under your dress. Place a large new white rug under the saddle to ensure grease, hair etc is reduced to a minimum.

5. Finally nominate someone who knows your horse to look after him when you dismount, ensure he is well looked after with water, shelter. It maybe a good idea to place him in a trailer, practice with the nominated groom getting the horse in and out of the trailer.

6. Let you photographer know that you intend to arrive on a horse and that you would like photographs of you arriving, in the grounds and saying goodbye.

7. Enjoy your day.

Late Love....worth the wait

Falling in love is no different at fifteen than it is at seventy-five, just usually minus the acne. There are still the same old emotions whirring around inside us. One's heart still feels so large that it might burst, you forget to eat and find yourself gazing dreamily out of the window……

As we mature like a fine wine, do we start to look past the packaging, and more for that ultimate best friend who will ensure that “Coming home” feeling. No I am not talking about the old joke “pipe and slippers” but that amazing feeling when “The one” holds you in their arms, smiles at you across the room or simply has a cuppa waiting for you.

Over the years I have had the pleasure of seeing couples of various ages become husband and wife, but sometimes it is the slightly older generation that put the real romance and love into a their wedding day.

“We need help but we are oldies” was the start of an email I received earlier this year from a very special lady who had indeed found love again. From the moment I met the couple, Michael and Jean it was obvious they were "in love".

"Why not" was the start of a unique conversation, quickly followed by at "our age it's the small things that make us happy" This is not a couple starting life together, Audrey and James were celebrating 60 years together, 3 children and a brood of grandchildren. Audrey has a wicked sense of humour, when I asked her what she wanted on her day she said "Champagne and loads of it" at her original wedding there was no alcohol, simply due to marrying on a shoe string.

So is love in your later years any better or just different. Does it matter if it is second, third or fourth time around or should we say just another chance at happiness -

Love is beautiful at any age...

Vintage at Bridal Gathering 2010

A fabulous day at the 3rd Bridal Gathering at Rainton Meadows on Sunday 7th November. All the North East Wedding Planning team enjoyed meeting brides and new suppliers.

Our stand had a distinct vintage theme with two tables showing a take on the bang on trend vintage. The blue tea party with classic blue and white bone china, silver cake stands and to complete the classic look a hand crafted 5 tier bird cage wedding cake.

The second table a contemporary take on modern vintage with soft pinks, cream and green. Classic tea cups, modern cake stands, hat boxes with beautiful roses and various birdcages - plus many more items.

When the weather turns..... bring on the WELLIES!

So you have the dream wedding dress and sparkly shoes, said I do and just as you step on the grass for some amazing photos.......your pure white shoes start to sink in the mud - not a good look at all.

Be a bang on trend bride and buy some funky wellies to avoid the above scene, whether you choose pure white bridal wellies with Swarovski Crystals or loud and proud multi coloured wellies you will be grateful of them on your special day.

The latest trend for winter 2010 is to include the funky footwear in your photographs, maybe even kit out all your bridesmaids in matching wellies. But no matter whether it is rain or shine you will be glad you bought them....

The NEWP team has been looking for a new way to show what we can do on a small budget.......sometimes text and information is simply not enough so we have created a small promotional video to show you.

The feature wedding is Melanie and Lee Marshall who tied the knot in November 2009.

Warm Winters

I have come to the conclusion that winter weddings are WONDERFUL! They are absolutely magical, so why are they so uncommon? Ask yourself why not get married in the winter season, especially the months of November and January/February. These are the months when most venues and suppliers will offer the greatest level of discount.

With dark nights and moody lighting this season can be fabulous, welcoming atmospheres can be created with the use of candle light, hurricane lanterns and fairy lights. Let your guests capture the essence of winter with rich canapés featuring cranberries, sage and cinnamon. Ensure your guests do not feel the cold while photographs are being taken by serving reception drinks of mulled wine or richly blended coffee with a splash of baileys.

At this time of year it is party season with shops full of elegant evening gowns and party dresses. Let your guests join in dressing up for your special occasion, every girl loves to dress up!!! If you are planning on wearing a coloured bridal gown, request all the guests wear white as a theme, this will ensure you stand out in all the photographs and is a little different..

Modern Vintage

We don’t have a time machine to turn back the clock to the 1950’s but a themed wedding provides a fabulous structure to the day. The North East Wedding Planners recent exhibition stand re-created and demonstrated the Vintage theme with a modern twist and flash of fuchsia pink at the Rainton Meadows Arena Bridal Gathering. The NEWP stand (81) showed visitors how the NEWP team pull together suppliers and products on our extensive supplier database to demonstrate the overall look and all on a budget.

The stand featured large bay trees decorated with old English pink roses, large silver glitter butterflies, a large 5ft pink feather plume with black vintage accessories, simple white chair covers with black satin, all complimented with classic white and black stationery.

The addition of the hand crafted bead and swarovski crystal napkins and wine glass accessories define the vintage look and add the wow factor.

Winter Wedding Theme (Marriott Wedding Fayre)

Just to throw something different into today’s wedding fayre we went with a winter wedding theme, yes it is August but with a little tweak the basic table could be changed to suit any season or theme..

Crisp ice white linen, simple white chair covers, large snow and snowball centre piece, plus the icing and cake. But as usual we added a little bling and glamour with a large snowy white gift tree complete with crystals and wishing messages, large mirrors and large diamonds.

Our aim at the show was to demonstrate with a little guidance and knowledge how simple it is to transform a basic table into something special. We are able to do this by using products and services from our key suppliers at fantastic negotiated rates.

What love really is..........

Sometimes we get to met and work with clients who are just simply different........in love and not afraid to show it. I have recently had the pleasure to work with the newly married (1^st August 2009) Mr. & Mrs. Tuck. These two really are the ultimate couple in love, happy, fun loving, caring and above all thoughtful of others.

Kara asked for a wedding with a difference, her first walk on the wild side was to shock me by her hair going pink just weeks before the wedding. James not to be out done - pink spikes!!
Every bride wants to be the centre of attention on her wedding day, but not Kara we worked together to ensure guests received a personal present and every child a present unique to their age and interest.
Just to shock family and friends we went with a simple but sophisticated theme for the wedding breakfast, champagne and strawberry toast, pure white chair covers and sash complimented with individual cream roses. Table diamonds and light blue crystals to decorate the reception tables simply lit by soft candle light. The cake now named the Kara Cake by the creator – finished with loud lavish blue feathers and crystals......

Kara and James asked for a children’s party for their evening reception, we gave them childrens mix ups, streamers, party poppers, hundreds of helium balloons, suspended exploding balloons, games and loud music for the couple who like to PARTY oh and they partied!!!!!

To see a couple so in love, smiling and laughing all day means we have achieved all the goals set by the client. This is my opportunity to say thank you to them both for selecting NEWP to assist them with their wedding day, it has been a total pleasure on our part.
